Tool storage doesn’t get much attention until it fails you — a drawer that won’t stay closed in the truck bed, a stackable box that cracks at the latch after a year. Milwaukee’s PACKOUT system has become the default modular storage platform for a reason, and we spent two months building out a PACKOUT stack for a truck-based setup to see if it holds up to real jobsite abuse.

What We Tested

A stack of the large tool box, a 2-drawer tool box, and a compact organizer, used daily out of a truck bed for two months across multiple job sites. We tested the locking stack mechanism under vibration during transport, dropped a loaded box from tailgate height (intentionally), and left it outside through a week of rain.

The locking stack system is the entire value proposition here, and it delivers — boxes latch together securely enough that we never had a stack separate during transport, even over rough gravel roads. The intentional tailgate drop test (about 3 feet, loaded with hand tools) resulted in a scuffed corner and nothing else; the box stayed sealed and functional.

The IP65 rating held up through a week left outside in rain — no water intrusion when the latches were properly engaged. The metal-reinforced latches show no signs of fatigue after two months of near-daily open/close cycles, which is more than we can say for the plastic latch systems on cheaper stackable box lines.

The real strength of the system is that it scales with you — start with one or two boxes and add organizers, drawers, or a rolling cart later without replacing anything, since every PACKOUT product locks into every other one.

Vs. DeWalt ToughSystem 2.0: Comparable durability and a similar modular concept. DeWalt’s boxes are slightly lighter; Milwaukee’s catalog of organizer and drawer options is broader.

Vs. generic stackable tool boxes: Budget stacking boxes save money upfront but the latch mechanisms are noticeably less durable and rarely carry a real IP water-resistance rating, which matters if the boxes live in a truck bed.

Anyone who transports tools regularly — truck-bed storage, van organization, or a garage that needs to go mobile for job sites. If your tools live permanently on a bench in a climate-controlled garage and never travel, the weatherproofing and impact resistance here are more capability than you need.
